Sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in the landscape: Approach for spatially explicit estimates

Climate change mitigation is a global response that requires actions at the local level. Quantifying sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHG) facilitate evaluating options. We present an approach to collate spatially explicit estimated fluxes GHGs (carbon dioxide, methane nitrous oxide) for main land use sectors in landscape, aggregate, calculate net emissions entire region. Our procedure was developed tested large river basin Finland, providing information from intensively studied eLTER research sites. To evaluate full GHG balance, natural ecosystems (lakes, rivers, undrained mires) were included together with anthropogenic activities, agriculture forestry. quantified based on calculations model (FRES) forest growth carbon balance (PREBAS), as well emission coefficients literature regarding lakes, mires, peat extraction sites cropland. Spatial data CORINE data, soil map, lake shorelines, national inventory statistical activities. Emission uncertainties evaluated Monte Carlo simulations. Artificial surfaces most intensive land-cover class. Lakes rivers about arable land. Forests dominant cover region (66%), C sink forests decreased total by 72%. The region's amounted 4.37 ± 1.43 Tg CO2-eq yr?1, corresponding intensity 0.16 Gg km?2 per capita 5.6 Mg yr?1. landscape opens opportunities examine sensitivities important changes climate, management actions, emissions.
